Pixelord - Lucid Freaks pt. 1 (Error Broadcast)
'Cartoon Friend' begins as quirkily as it intends to go on. Without ever having heard the guy, you can instantly get the impression that Pixelord enjoys all things arcade (with a dub-splat of archaic to boot). Leftfield fans will instantly identify with all of Pixels tracks, that unmistakable blend of faulty electronica with healthy, solid, drink-spilling kick bass. It's as hip-hop as Q-Tip on hot coals and I found myself longing for a Roots Manuva vocal in there - only to be delighted when a bad tempered vocal starts to declare 'I'. You'll see what I mean.
Much the same can be said about other tracks 'Quartz Boy', 'Cybernator' and 'Boss Worm'. They all follow a similar template, which is fine until you yearn for just a touch of something else. There are some seriously sexy vocal snippets to be found across the board, and you can expect more of a Crunk beat from 'Boss Worm' which was good to hear. A very good level of production all-round: the low frequencies aren't too intrusive and the beats are crisp and punchy. You could either chill to this EP or get your 2-step on, but if there were any more than these 4 tracks on 'Lucid Freaks pt.1' then you would probably want to change it for something with more variety. I may be wrong but this may be a collection of Ableton jam sessions, as there are few significant break-downs. And while the high pitched bleeping seems to be a trademark sound throughout, after a while it hertz the ears... Regardless of these points, overall 'Lucid Freaks pt.1' will put you in a good mood from Russia with love.
