A Reviewer's Dystopia

It's probably an act of perfect timing on my part, observing the slow and arduous decay of the print medias, the proliferation of digital downloading (legal and otherwise), the advent of Spotify and Last.fm; and then deciding that my new favourite past-time would be reviewing some of the most readily available, free music there is.

It used to be the case that reviewers were arbiters of taste, in more fields than just music the person with the biggest medium to project their own views on to was, often enough, the one who got to dole out the success. Not exactly democratic or open as far as cultural hierarchies goes, but it happened and it happened not all that long ago. Even I at a relatively young 24/25 can remember the days when buying a magazine like NME was an actual cultural choice because, cynical though I may have been, what was contained within those pages still made up the scenery upon which my musical tastes were built. I could and did detest half of what they promoted but those bands I did settle on were still ready sealed with the stamp of approval from one journo or another. Although you could of course point out that record company PR departments had as much (if not more) to do with defining that musical world as the writers did but even beyond the realms of 'popular' music the art of reviewing has usually meant something. Genre specific fanzines, local rags, even random people who just liked the sound of their own voice and the look of their own tastes; they created a whole system for propagating music, corrupt and discriminatory as that system may have been.

Net Label Coalition Forums

E-mail Print PDF

Just a quick note to remind people about the Net Label Coalition and the forums we host for it; it's an organisation designed to bring the net label and free music communities closer together, both to debate the issues facing our movement and to promote a sense of 'belonging', for want of a better word. It already has some of the top labels there are signed up, including such bastions of good, CC music as blocSonic, Planet Terror, Rack & Ruin, WM Recordings and a load more worthy of note. So, have a look by clicking the image above, spread the word, join the forums by, post up some random pictures of kittens, indulge in needlessly aggressive arguments, plug your new album, go crazy.

ETHX - Boom To Bloom

It's a rarity within the CC world to come across a new album, from an act you don't know which does in fact have some star quality to it. Not that fame is any measure of quality of course, but discovering something with one third/half of Political/Alternative Hip-Hoppers 'The Coup' making some notable contributions still appeals at least a little to my sense of celeb stalking. Of course any notion of that would rely on you having heard of 'The Coup' in the first place, which I'm sure many haven't, but seek out some of their stuff nonetheless; it should make for a worthwhile listen. The Adelit@s - Un Solo Grito Review

E-mail Print PDF

I got about 45 seconds into the first track before deciding that The Adelit@s were awesome, and therefore worthy of review. It’s a tad rough around the edge in terms of production but the songs jump out at you and have an incredibly infectious energy. The four songs range from mid-tempo to frantically-fast and dance across a variety of styles in the most wonderfully fun and listenable way. From bouncy country segments (‘Hay Que Luchar’) to mid-tempo punk to frantically-fast trash riffage; each song is filled with two or three enjoyable surprises. Lyrically it’s pretty well written anarcho-punk aggression. Discussing topics like immigration and revolution with a strong conviction that transcends the fact that the lyrics are actually in Spanish and I had to get the band to send me translations. You can just feel the passion. (READ MORE)
